Gamechanger
‘You must gather your party before venturing forth’. This phrase, delivered in the charismatic voice of Piotr Fronczewski, is iconic for many older gamers. You may have heard it many times while spending long hours in the world of Baldur’s Gate – one of the first expansive role-playing games (RPGs). Created in the late 1990s, the Forgotten Realms world proved so addictive that Baldur’s Gate returned in a new version in 2023.
The strength of role-playing games is precisely the unique universes in which they are set. The oldest and most popular Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) system is extremely popular with players who meet in person, and video game enthusiasts. The same is true of Warhammer. Game worlds are expanding into multiverses, and new lands are constantly being created. Their inspiration comes from mythology, literature (e.g. the works of J.R.R. Tolkien), films (e.g. Star Wars), and sometimes it is the other way around – the games come first and are the source material for other pop culture goodies (e.g. the Fallout series).
What is the phenomenon of role-playing games? What is world building and why is it of interest to researchers? What qualities should a fictional world have to be fascinating, immersive and – in its own way – realistic, even while incorporating elements of magic?
