The moderators, Beata Głowacka and Jakub Tołkaczewski, will ensure a lively and respectful discussion.

We got it from the soil

  • 13 October, 1:30 PM – 2:30 PM
  • Conference centre, level 0 (auditorium)

We seek materials of the future, create complex technologies, and develop recycling methods. But is it possible that we are forgetting about a certain biomaterial, which is the very basis of life on Earth? The one that we tread on, cultivate, dig into, and toss around?

Thanks to the soil, we can not only produce food, fight the climate crisis and marvel at diverse landscapes. Its extraordinary properties and importance will be the starting point for a discussion about composting, death, and... poop. During the debate, we will consider whether we still find soil-related projects controversial or if they have become natural and obvious.

For a while or for years?

  • 13 October, 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM
  • Conference centre, level 0 (auditorium)

Durability and quality are (besides aesthetic qualities) the most important features that define the value of everyday objects. Durable, long-lasting, decent – this is how furniture, shoes, and clothing should be. An oak table crafted by an artisan used to serve a family for generations. Has anything changed?

Does the availability of disposable and cheap products, which can be easily replaced without any regret, change our relationship with objects? Or perhaps the need for mobility and ecological awareness leads us to appreciate the value of biodegradable items and owning fewer clothes?

During the debate, we will explore the topics of durability and temporality in design and architecture. We will reflect on how to introduce circularity and whether repairing objects is a prerequisite for sustainability. We will discuss the advantages and challenges related to creating things ‘for the long term’ as well as the perspective of intentionally designing things to be temporary.
